Cold Email Follow-Up Templates: 15 Sequences That Get Replies
"Just checking in to see if you had a chance to review my previous email."
This is the default follow-up that everyone sends. It's also the one that gets ignored the most. It adds zero value, reminds them they already didn't respond to you, and signals that you have nothing new to offer.
Here are 15 templates and 3 complete sequences that actually work.
The Golden Rules of Cold Email Follow-Ups
- Every follow-up must add new value — New angle, new data point, new story, new social proof. Never just bump the thread.
- Change the subject line on follow-up 3+ — Fresh subject = fresh open chance for people who ignored the first thread
- Get shorter, not longer — Follow-up emails should be 2-4 sentences. Not another wall of text.
- Make it easy to respond negatively — "If this isn't relevant, just say so and I'll leave you alone" dramatically increases response rate
- Space them correctly — Day 1 → Day 4 → Day 7 → Day 12 → Day 21. Not 3 emails in one week.

15 Individual Follow-Up Templates
Templates 1-5: New Value Angles
Template 1: The New Data Point
Subject: RE: [original subject] — one more data point
Hi [FirstName],
Just saw this come through: [relevant industry stat or news].
Relevant to what I mentioned last week. Does it change the calculus for [Company] at all?
[Signature]
Template 2: The Named Client Drop
Subject: RE: [original subject]
Hi [FirstName],
I know I already reached out, but [Recognizable Company] just went live with the same system I mentioned.
If it'd help to see what that looks like in practice, happy to share specifics.

Template 3: The Timing Pivot
Subject: Different timing?
Hi [FirstName],
Reached out a few weeks ago about [topic]. Guessing Q1 was chaotic.
Now that it's [Month] — is this more relevant? [Company] looks like it's at the right stage for this.
[Signature]
Template 4: The Question Only
Subject: Quick question
Hi [FirstName],
Not a pitch — genuine question: What's the biggest friction point in your current outbound process?
We ask every prospect this and the patterns are genuinely interesting.
[Signature]
Template 5: The Mutual Connection
Subject: [Mutual Connection] mentioned you
Hi [FirstName],
[Mutual name] mentioned you'd be a good person to talk to about [topic].
I've been working with [their company / industry] for [X] years on [outcome]. Worth a quick call?
[Signature]
Templates 6-10: The Re-Engagers
Template 6: The Confession
Subject: I'll be honest
Hi [FirstName],
I've sent a few emails and haven't heard back. I'm guessing either this isn't relevant or the timing is off.
Both are totally valid. If that's the case, one word back ("not interested") and I'll leave you alone forever.
If there's a tiny bit of interest, I'll make the next step worth 10 minutes of your time.

Template 7: The Humor Approach
Subject: I'm starting to feel like I'm talking to myself here
Hi [FirstName],
Three emails. No reply. I'm either annoying you or landing in spam.
If it's spam, check your junk folder — there's actually useful stuff in there.
If it's annoyance, sorry. Last one, I promise.

Template 8: The Results Update
Subject: Update since I last emailed you
Hi [FirstName],
Just wanted to close the loop on something: since I reached out last month, [Client Company] hit [specific result].
Not saying this to brag. Saying it because it changed what I think is possible for companies at your stage.
Worth 15 minutes to run through the numbers?

Template 9: The Soft Door
Subject: No pressure — just leaving this here
Hi [FirstName],
Not going to pitch you again.
Just leaving this here in case it's useful: [link to relevant article/resource]
If the timing ever gets right for [Company], you know where to find me.

Template 10: The Re-Intro
Subject: Starting over
Hi [FirstName],
We've been in each other's inbox a few times but never had a real conversation.
Fresh start: I'm [Name] from [Company]. We help [ICP] achieve [outcome] without [pain point].
[Company] looks like a strong fit. Does 15 minutes this week work?

Templates 11-15: The Closers
Template 11: The Explicit Breakup
Subject: Closing your file
Hi [FirstName],
No response usually means one of three things:
1. Bad timing
2. Not relevant
3. My emails are going to spam
If it's 1 or 2, totally understand. Reply with the number and I'll note it and leave you alone.
If it's 3, check junk — there's something worth reading in there.

Template 12: The Last Shot
Subject: Last email from me
Hi [FirstName],
This is my last email. I genuinely think [Company] would benefit from [brief value prop], but I'm not going to keep sending messages you don't want.
If you're ever ready to explore this: [Calendly link]
Good luck with [something specific about their company].

Template 13: The Compliment Close
Subject: I've been watching [Company]
Hi [FirstName],
Followed [Company] since [specific event/post/funding]. What you're building is genuinely impressive.
My last ask: 20 minutes to show you one thing that could add [specific metric] to your pipeline. If it doesn't make sense, you'll have lost 20 minutes.
If it does, you'll have a new distribution channel.

Template 14: The Low-Commitment Ask
Subject: 5 minutes?
Hi [FirstName],
I know your time is worth a lot. Not asking for a full call.
5 minutes on a voice note or a Loom — I'll show you exactly what I'd do for [Company] in the first 30 days.
If it looks worth exploring, we talk. If not, I'll never bother you again.
[Signature]
Template 15: The Network Play
Subject: Not a pitch — a connection
Hi [FirstName],
Reached out a few times about [topic]. Totally fine if it's not the right fit.
Separate ask: I'm putting together a roundtable of [ICP] founders to discuss [relevant topic]. Would you want in? No selling — just real conversation.
Reply yes or no and I'll send the details.
